Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
When your thoughts feel distressing, overwhelming, and all-consuming and you feel unable to stop responding to them
-
Experience intrusive, unwanted thoughts that feel upsetting or out of character
Repeatedly check, wash, clean, or seek reassurance to feel certain or safe
Avoid people, places, situations, or responsibilities because they trigger anxiety
Mentally review conversations, memories, or decisions to make sure you didn't make a mistake
Repeat actions until they feel "just right"
Feel trapped in cycles of doubt, uncertainty, or fear despite knowing your worries may be excessive
Women experiencing OCD specific to the perinatal/ postpartum period:
Experience unwanted, intrusive thoughts or mental images about bringing harm to your baby
Repeatedly check on your baby
Avoid being alone with your baby or engaging in certain caregiving tasks
Seek frequent reassurance
Feel compelled to clean, wash, sanitize, or follow rigid routines
Recognize that the thoughts are irrational or excessive
-
The nature of intrusive thoughts and why they feel so powerful
The underlying anxiety driving the cycle of fear and reassurance
The meaning this experience may hold within your emotional world
This is not about judging or eliminating thoughts—but about changing your relationship to them so they feel less threatening and more manageable. -
Intrusive thoughts begin to feel less frightening as you understand what they are—and what they are not
The cycle of anxiety, fear, and reassurance becomes more recognizable and less consuming
You feel less alone and more able to speak about what’s been difficult to hold internally
You begin to feel more grounded, steady, and like yourself again

OCD and intrusive thoughts can affect women at any stage of life. While I have a special interest in working with women experiencing perinatal and postpartum OCD, I also work with women whose OCD shows up in many different ways. Together, we begin to understand what’s happening so it feels less frightening, more understandable, and less isolating.
